چکیده

Inspired by the theory of variety-expanding product innovation we derive a testable relationship of outsourcing on the growth rate of knowledge. We estimate this relationship with a firm-level dataset, which is a unique match of PATSTAT patent data and the Amadeus dataset. We find evidence that forward spillovers are stronger than backward spillovers, where forward spillovers are defined as spillovers going down the value chain from producers to users of intermediate inputs. Moreover, we conclude that interindustry spillovers are stronger than intra-industry spillovers. This holds when considering only the more important forward spillovers as well as when considering both directions of knowledge flows JEL Code: C21, F14, O30, O52.

R&D Outsourcing Policy with Input Spillovers Based on Multi-Outsourcer and Multi-Supplier

In this paper, a multi-outsourcer and multisupplier R&D outsourcing model with input spillovers is proposed to study the R&D outsourcing policies of outsourcers and R&D suppliers. The optimal outsourcing policies of outsourcers and the optimal investment policies of suppliers are obtained and the effects of outsourcing parameters on the policies of outsourcers and R&D suppliers are analyzed. It...

Optimal Foreign Investment Dynamics in the Presence of Technological Spillovers

In this paper we present a dynamic model of a firm which decides whether to outsource parts of its production to a less developed economy where wages and the level of technology are lower. Outsourcing reduces production costs but is associated with spillovers to foreign potential competitors. Spillovers over time increase productivity of firms in the foreign country and make them stronger compe...

The Organization of Supply: a Vertical Equilibrium Analysis∗

In this paper I study how the make-or-buy decision of a firm depends on the organization of its peers. I consider a multi-firm framework in which firms choose whether to integrate into the supply of an intermediate input or to outsource its production, and choose the size of their supplier network if outsourcing. Firms find it optimal to share the same set of suppliers, as there are economies o...
